Scholarship program The scholarship program was founded in 1989 by Dr. Alexander and Mrs. Agnes Chuang in memory of Alexander's mother Mrs. C.Y. Chuang and Agnes' father, Dr. Chou-Ying Lee. They contributed the seed money, in the amount of $2400, to begin a program which offers scholastic awards to college-bound high school seniors who demonstrate excellent academic and extracurricular records. Only two scholarship for $250 each were awarded for the first three years. These scholarships were also restricted to the children of SDCASEA members. In 1994, Drs. Fah-Seong & Polly Liew donated $5000 to expand the program, enabling the committee to add two more scholarships that are reserved especially to those students whose parents do not belong to SDCASEA membership. All the scholarship were increased to $500. In 1998, the program was expanded to include tuition assistance led by Dr. Walter Ku. In 1999, the association has been granted the status of 501-C-3 organization. All donations to scholarship and/or general fund will be tax-exempt.
