  10. Need quality appliances at a reasonable price? There is no website for this one, but it may be worth a visit. Selected brand name appliances are sold at 15% to 50% reductions daily. Some items may be specifically marked down 50% on some days—watch for the advertisement in Section A of the San Diego Union-Tribune newspapers. All items are not in a box. Some are customer returned items that have been checked and determined to be in good working order (and classified as “used”), others are new items that suffer a dint (often on the sides which cannot be seen once the appliance is installed) or minor scratches here and there during unloading at the main store. All are classified as “damaged” legally. But new and used appliances are clearly marked. The appliances include freezers, refrigerators, compactors, cooking ranges, ovens, cook-tops, microwave ovens, laundry machines, dryers, dishwashers, flat-screen televisions, in a wide variety of brand names. Do your picking every Thursday or Friday for the best choices. Sears Retail Outlet Store, located at 960 Sherman Drive (near Morena Blvd.), phone (619) 497-1123.

Protect Yourself When You Buy a Package Tour

bulletGet supplier default insurance. When you must prepay more than you feel comfortable to lose, inquire if the company offers “supplier default” insurance so that you get your prepayment back if your trip does not materialize or if you cannot complete your trip. As of early December, the following companies offer this type of insurance:
bulletAccess America (800-284-8300), www.accessamerica.com
bulletTravel Guard (800-826-4919), www.travel-guard.com
bulletTravelex, www.travelex-insurance.com
bulletUnicard Travel Association (800-501-0352), www.unicard.com
bulletPay with credit card 60 days or less before the trip. Many credit cards offer protection against payment for service not received, but that protection is good only for 60 days. Moreover, many of the best travel bargains are for last-minute purchase.
bulletBuy your air, hotel, and sightseeing separately. Airlines usually give you money back if they fail for one reason or another. When you book hotels separately, you do not have to pay a huge lump sum in advance as you would in a travel tour package.
bulletUse a charter rather than scheduled airline. Operators of tours based on charter air are required to put customer’s prepayment in escrow accounts. They cannot pay suppliers (airlines, hotels) until they have provided the service. Tours that use scheduled airlines are not covered by the federal regulations.
bulletBuy from a member of the U.S. Tour Operators Association. USTOA is the only trade organization that provides a robust consumer protection system. Membership in the association requires tour operators to post a bond or otherwise demonstrate sufficient financial backing to provide reimbursement in the event of a problem. To locate a member, check www.ustoa.com.
